Wow, so this week was really rad. To start off Denis y Sandra got married! They are this rad couple that has been less active ever since their baptisms. When I first came to Chota, all they seemed to do was fight and yell. If you talked about marriage, they laughed in your face. But they kind of always dreamed of having a happy family and over these past few months they’ve made it happen. Yesterday, they got married civilly and now they are preparing to have their family sealed in the temple. I’ve seen them change a lot and I have seen the gospel really take effect in their lives. They are so cool and I’m way stoked for them.
Something else that has been going on has been the protesting by the people of Chota against the Peruvian government. The people have been asking for the government to give them support and funding in order to bring their Chota into the modern age and to fix the roads that connect it to the other provinces and cities. The government has yet to even start any projects. So, the people are protesting by blocking off all the roads that connect Chota to everywhere else (there are only two roads that lead out of Chota, one to Chiclayo and one to Cajamarca.) At these roadblocks, the people walk around rioting in big groups and it’s pretty much the worst when you have a temple trip planned for the branch in a week. We were starting to get worried because we were only a few days away from our planned trip to the Temple and the protesters were planning on keeping up the road-block for a whole month. Thanks to a lot of prayer, they just barely took down the barricades, at least temporarily, and now we are able to go to Trujillo. It is a straight-up miracle.
This week we have seen miracles. One was the wedding, another was the roadblock being lifted. But for me, the biggest miracle was seeing a change in one of our “eternal investigators.” She is so awesome; she just hasn’t progressed for years and years. I saw her open her heart for the first time recently to the gospel. She has been progressing so much and I have felt the help of the Spirit as I teach, plan and study what the Lord would have her hear. I have felt His influence more strongly for her more than for anyone else I have ever worked with. She is amazing and God has very specifically told us that she will get baptized very soon. Really, the thing that has been the coolest with her is that I have seen for myself how much God loves her and how hard he tries with her and how he has never given up on trying to guide her. It’s so rad!
Another rad thing has been working with Denis, the guy who got married as he works to be a worthy priesthood holder again. He had to make some really big changes, but he did it. It was so powerful because he didn’t do it to be able to pass the sacrament or to be able to go to the temple. He did it out of humility, love and his desire to be the best father possible.
Miracles happen so much here. I love it. I love Chota and I love being a missionary. I am a true messenger of Christ. I know the gospel was restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith. Say your prayers. Read the scriptures. Don’t be dumb.
